287. Uneasy lies one’s head

“Uneasy lies one’s head. An ancient, cumbersome crown might have suited our forefathers, whose exploits on the battlefield could effortlessly carry this heavy a headgear, yet it is ill-fitted for a monarch that governs an empire from a throne room.”

“As fortune would have it, our Commonwealth includes kingdoms spanning the entirety of the globe. We have procured a crown more fitted to her Majesty’s needs. A true Indian treasure”

“This crown, was it procured with bloodshed?”

“The raj is not a popular rule.”

“We detest violence, mister prime minister.”

The queen took the crown in her hands and inspected it thoroughly.

“But we do find it pretty. Can you procure more of this ilk?”

“Not without more bloodshed.”

The queen put the crown on her head. It was light. A far better fit than the English crown.

“The world deserves British rule,” she said.

“And we hear the gems of the Dark Continent shine brighter still.

Go conquer it.”

242. All aboard!

“All aboard!” the conductor yelled. Needlessly, since the platform had emptied long ago.

Gone were the days when adventurers and prospectors were fighting over the best places, elbowing their way to the carriage door, then to the window seats. From there they’d be able to spot the rich veins that sprouted from the newly-formed mountains at their destination first. They’d gain an insurmountable advantage over the poor souls condemned to the inner aisles, already plotting to get hold of the treasures the hungry dumb wolves near the window would excavate for them.

Soon the train would stop running altogether. The conductor would be reassigned and the engine sold for scrap metal.

And as it would leave the station, towed to its last berth to be broken up, the glow of the day’s dying sun would give this loyal servant of man’s greed one final, golden hurrah.

49. Gamma Seti was just a tiny dot

Gamma Seti was just a tiny dot on the night sky for most Earthlings but for those select few who were lucky enough to get closer it quickly became much more than that. The roving planet had entered our solar system in the last years of the 21st century and had slowly inched its way towards the outer rim of Jupiter, who’s gravitational field had gobbled up the planet as its 68th moon.
